Politics move fast. I like to write about the Iowa Caucus but I didn’t get to do it as much as I liked this go around. 

 That said, I write about stuff I find amusing or interesting so it’s not like it’s insightful. I may still write everything post- Caucus date. It isn’t like it needs to be timely. But I have got backlogged writing about the campaign ads which Whoo Doggy are fun this year

Vivek Ramaswamy Right Notes

Vivek stuck to personal appearances instead of ads, but he did run this one.  In the day of negative ads, I am starting with this one which features Vivek’s childhood piano teacher. There really isn’t anything more soul stirring patriotic than a kid playing piano. It just is. Reminds me of when Van Cliburn took 14% of the vote from Nixon in the 1960 Republican Race 




Nikki Haley Role Model 

This one is an anti-Haley ad from a DeSantis PAC and it’s Haley saying that Hillary Clinton is the reason she got into politics. Which is a nice nonpartisan comment and we should find inspiration where we do, but it also led to this “LOL Nikki said she wants to be Hillary” ad

Ron DeSantis Too Weak to Lead 

 This one is particularly fun as it shows DeSantis parroting Trump saying the same words and having the same “accordion” hands. But who is the ad for? Trump for showing DeSantis is an imitation? Democrats would seem like the best answer for saying there’s no difference in the two but in this case, it’s from a Haley PAC 




Ryan Binkley A Prayer 

I really expected CEO/Pastor Binkley to make a little bit more headway despite his David vs Goliath matchup (I think he would like that) but he seems to have topped out at just under one percent in polls. His ads are ubiquitous at the dinner table. They do look slightly lower market than the PAC attack ads it sits besides, but I do love his positivity and nonpartisanship. 




Ron DeSantis Dumpster Fire 

DeSantis is a dumpster fire. That’s it. That’s literally the ad. Paid for by Haley PAC 




Nikki Haley New Generation 

This starts out “I will just say it, Biden is too old”. But she isn’t saying it, is she? Biden’s 81. Is 77 also too old. Well, just say it. 

Nikki Haley No Respect 

 Oh snap, the DeSantis campaign found a video of Haley talking in New Hampshire saying they correct Iowa’s mistakes. Unforgivable.

Nikki Haley Tricky Nikki 

 An otherwise banal DeSantis PAC ad showing issue flip flops from Haley, though points for the Tricky Nikki moniker. 

Donald Trump Thankful 

This masterful (or insane) ad only works if you know that Iowa Gov Kim Reynolds has been a vocal supporter of Ron DeSantis after a falling out with her and Donald Trump. This ad is literally all the old footage when Trump visited the state and Reynolds is praising Trump. This a literally an ad running that makes it looks like Reynolds is endorsing Trump when the opposite is true. 




Now that’s politics. Sometimes it’s even better than Pro Wrestling

Adwatch: Ron DeSantis

Today in “I watch Political ads so you don’t have to”, I’m covering Ron DeSantis. I heard the buzz about DeSantis and I seriously thought the nomination was his. To be fair, some times timing is everyone and in the case of Rick Perry, Rudy Giuliani, Michael Bloomberg and so many others, it just doesn’t work out.  DeSantis’s first ads displayed him as the Warrior against the Woke. While I think that a certain part of the crowd appreciated it, I found it weird DeSantis (or at least his supportive PAC) was focusing on his fights against Disney, Target and Bud Light.  It just seemed so odd against the backdrop of say, Doug Burgum, you know, actually accomplishing something.  Did it move the needle? “Florida is where Woke goes to Die”.  Trump made fun of it, while the rest of us yawned. The Iowa Caucus Postmortem

The Iowa caucus is a weird thing, no doubt.  The 2020 Democratic Iowa Caucus is considered a mess. It should be noted that the Democrat caucus was a ranked choice vote that added a wrinkle in the process and with so many candidates that year was probably never going to do smooth. The Caucus is weird though. I defend it on the basis that if forces politicians to interact with the public. That’s important.  I do think maybe there is something about viability from it on the Democratic side (Iowa loved Obama and disliked Hillary which both seem prescient) but on the Republican side the nation is out of step with Iowa (Huckabee, Santorum, Cruz). The idea of the caucus is to discuss politics with like minded neighbors and I think many have experienced that.  Here’s the thing though and I won’t say it’s not weird. It’s a physical act. Caucus Byte- Save a Horse, Support Perry

There are some truths that I hold about Donald Trump.  One of these is that there are two people who should be given credit for the Trump Presidency  One is Vince McMahon.  Whenever Trump might be out of the spotlight, McMahon found a spot for him- whether it was 1988 and 1989 when Wrestlemania 4 and Wrestlemania 5 were held at Trump Plaza or 2007 when Trump was part of the main event of Wrestlemania 23.  Die a hero or live long enough to become the villain  The other is John Rich, the country singer who became famous in the bands Lonestar and Big and Rich. Rich won 2011s Celebrity Apprentice Season 4. The Apprentice has been hot when it debuted in 2004 but cooled after a couple of years. CA4 (which was the 11th overall season) was the season that jump started the series again- climbing up to 46 in the TVRatings- the highest ranking since 2005. Rich was a compelling contestant on a colorful cast with people like Gary Busey, Lil Jon and Lisa Rinna.  Simpler...
